Ice Sculptures - Elements trapped in ice
How clear?! .... That's the question we field on a regular basis. The quality of the ice produced at Ice Art is carving grade and is crystal clear, unlike normal ice which is opaque, dirty and fractured.
This clear ice, which is the only suitable ice for ice sculptures, is produced in 150kg blocks and does not simply look great, but it is also an extremely uniform structurally as there are no air or salts trapped in the ice. By virtue of this, elaborate shapes and designs can be carved without the flaking and cracking that you would find in normal ice. Ice sculptures in normal dirty ice don't just look terrible, they are limited in terms of the shapes that can be made and the melting time is much faster.

This also means that the ice sculptures melt very slowly and is very resistant to ambient temperatures... All ice sculptures hate wind and direct sun however! It takes a full four days to produce one block of clear ice, so a number of these blocks are produced on an ongoing basis to be able to provide the building demand year on year since 2003. Interactive Ice Sculptures
For the most part, an ice sculpture can stand alone as a feature, as purely a static decor item. The look and feel of the ice is unique enough to carry this off. Therefore ice sculptures of Logo's, animals, product replicas etc...can generate enough of an appeal all by their lonesome selves.
However, the fantastic thing about ice sculptures, and something we like to focus on at Ice Art is bring interactive elements into the mix when the function or event suits it. Ice sculptures can be made into Luge's for pouring shooters, or for a more permanent flow they can also double up as a drinks fountain with the liquid flowing through the ice sculpture and into a catch tray. Live ice carvings on site for guests is very entertaining, but even more so when we can actually pull out members of the guest party and let them assist us on the completion of the ice sculptures... normally towards the beginning so that there is less chance of them hacking off a crucial part of the almost finished sculpture!
Sculptures that chill bottles, or keep seafood or ice cream cold are great ways to make use of the ice sculptures temperature properties as well as its visual elements.
Ice Bars for exanple, can easily be converted into a seafood station, or even an ice cream station - looks fantastic and serves an icy purpose too.

Ice Sculpture - Logo's.... Frozen Assets
When it comes to ice carvings and ice sculptures, replication of logos in ice is a common request and of course a speciality at Ice Art... always proving itself to be a fantastic method to generate a focal point around a brand or activation.

The ice sculptures can be pre-carved in our freezer and delivered as completed items or carved on site at the event as an interactive entertainment peice. Every logo is different and requires a different approach based on its design, fragility and also the final scale that the logo will be produce on. Fine details on a small scale can melt quickly when carved 3D, and so if the ice sculpture is very intricate, an engraving technique is used with snow, aptly named snowfill, to create a contrast image of this subject - the Ferrari and Ogilvy logos are great examples of this.
Whereas the Maserati and the Smart Car logos are 3D. A combination of the two techniques also produces a great effect. A client's physical brand, such as a product, can also be replicated as in the case of the Bell's Truck and the Merc S class.

The ice medium has always intrigued people and generates a hub of interest around the sculpture, with guests up close and personal with the brand. The focal point also offers a great corporate photo opportunity.
Logo work can be combined with a fountain or a functional items such as an ice bar, ice service station, ice drinks cooler etc...

Ice Sculpture Logistics
Transport and set up of the ice carvings and ice bars is relatively straight forward but somewhat labour intensive with each carving weighing between 70 – 100kg. Each Ice bar can be well over a ton of ice.
The ice will be transported in freezer trucks or vans to the venue, from there, trolleys and manual labour will put the ice into position at the location.
Each Carving will be in a drip tray facility with contained drainage, which also doubles up as a light box. The Ice bar sits in interlocking floor drip tray, from which water will be hand pumped with a silent electric pump at certain stages throughout the event. This is a subtle action and can be done with very little attention being drawn.
Ice Art crew will take roughly 1-2 hours to set up per night and may require access the day before each event to set up light boxes and drip trays. This crew will also be at the location for the duration of the event to maintain all carvings and drainage facilities. Each light box requires a plug point, extension leads can of course be organised as per the location requirements discovered on the locations Recce.
The breakdown will commence when indicated by the client. Ice Carvings are simply taken down just as they were erected, taken out of the venue on trolleys and left to melt outside in a designated area… back to water they return. Light boxes will be removed from the venue on the same night, or early the next morning depending on the breakdown requirements of the venue

Ice Sculptures in the Heat of Summer

It is a question that I receive on a regular basis from clients new to the Ice Sculpture industry and the service that we provide at Ice Art in South Africa.
People are usually only familiar with the quality of ice blocks that they find or make themselves in their freezer. This is standard, low quality - or dirty ice as we call it. Full of all the natural salts found in water and also dissolved air which results in a porous crystalline weak structure of ice. It looks terrible and is full on air bubbles and melts very quickly. It is not suitable at all for high quality ice sculptures for a high end market. It may only be suitable to practice or teach the skill of ice sculpting.
At Ice Art, we only produce ice carving quality blocks. Each one 150kg of crystal clear ice. This is the only suitable quality ice for ice sculptures and ice bars, or in fact any ice structure as this ice is completely uniform, has no air bubbles and the dissolved salts have been removed in the manufacturing process. This strength allows us to build solid structures such as Ice Bars or Ice Walls or large scale installations for events and functions. Special machines or block makers are used to produce these ice blocks. At Ice Art we produce around 15 tons of this quality ice per month to service our industry of hand carved ice sculptures.
